Ridgewood Public School student wins Legion Public Speaking Contest

A Ridgewood Public School (RPS) student recently achieved remarkable success in a speech writing competition, securing first place at the school, branch, and zone levels, all before competing and coming out on top at the district level!

Grade 6 student, Kara Liscombe, started her journey on February 23 at the school-level competition, where she went up against fellow intermediate students in her grade.

For her presentation, Liscombe explored the topic of brain rot and how it impacts the developing brain, “I chose this subject because kids don’t get off screens nowadays instead of actually realizing what’s happening in the world.”

After delivering the speech with confidence and courage, Liscombe progressed to the branch-level competition held on March 4 at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 519 in Coboconk. This level invited students from both RPS and Lady Mackenzie Public School.

After winning another first-place title, Liscombe advanced to the zone-level competition on March 4 at the Coboconk Legion, followed by the district-level competition on March 28 in Marmora.

“Kara worked very hard on creating and practicing her speech. She would time herself and share her speech in front of her friends before speaking to the whole class, all who voted her speech as one of the class winners,” explained RPS Grade 6 teacher, Stephanie Taylor.
