NOTES FROM THE PRINCIPAL

There is so much to celebrate at Rolling Hills. We have received so much inspiration and motivation through special visitors, students, teachers, parents, and our community. It is evident that we make a difference, but it is also evident that there are many who make a difference for us.

We began the celebration this month at Ken Reid with our Cross Country runners. We would like to thank Mr. Cox and Mr. Marshall for all their time and effort to train our runners for this event. The month carried us on in to the soccer season. All three teams made it to the County Tournament. Through rain and wind our junior team fought hard to place in the semi-final game. We know that for many, this was a first time team experience. Thank you to Mr. Jolley, your expertise and guidance was greatly appreciated. The intermediate girls and boys teams both placed second in the county. Well done and a big thank you to their coaches, Ryan McMillan and Emilee van der Veen .

Along with the sports, we have had a great introduction to character education in the truest sense. The “Me to We” celebration highlighted the importance of “being the change” that we want see. Our MAD crew had the opportunity to learn more about the opportunities to make a change in their all day workshop. This day was followed by a very special visit from Henry and Ruth Kayatha from Kenya, and Anita and Eric Walters from the Creation of Hope. They came to congratulate and celebrate the difference Rolling Hills has made, and will make for 16 children in Kenya. The Hope Home-Rolling Hills Residence was built with money raised by your child. We would like to thank Abbie Wright and Jason Veley for your time and effort to organize this for us.

The month ahead brings our first term report and parent-teacher interviews. Reports will go home Tuesday November 24th. We will send a form home to ask your interview time preference. Interviews will take place the evening of Thursday November 26th and the morning of Friday November 27th.

In place of electives for juniors and intermediates, we are planning a trip to the Science Centre to see the world renowned Body Worlds exhibit. We would like to make the most of the experience and book our students into a special educational science program and take in a special IMAX film. Further details will follow as we set the dates and the program with the Science Centre.

There are some dates to keep in mind. We would like to invite you to our November 11th assembly at 10:40 am and to our Praise Assembly on November 26th at 10 am, and just as reminder, November 6th and 27th are both PA days.

As many of you are aware, a number of students are away for various reasons. In the event that your Intermediate child is absent from school please make sure they check the class website for homework assignments. Intermediate students are on rotary, and therefore must assume responsibility for catching up on missed school work.

I would like to take this chance to thank all you for your continuing support. It is important that we work together to make this the best experience for your child. Please call if you have any questions, or if you would like further information about any and all of our school initiatives.

October News

NOTES FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents/Guardians:

As I walked along on my lunchtime duty, a student came up to me and started a casual conversation. He could not believe that it is only two weeks away from Thanksgiving. We have left the summer behind and are well into our school year. I have to admit, as I started to think about his comment I was quite surprised at how the time has gone by.

In so many ways we have picked up where we left off last year, and in other ways we are paving new roads with new adventures. This October will be an exciting month. Our first event, on October 16th at 9:30 am, is the Me To We presentation, partially supported by our Speak Up Grants. It begins with a key note address, and is followed by two student workshops. On the following Monday, Eric Walters will visit with the Head Administrator of the Rolling Hills Residence in Kenya.  It is a time for celebration and thanks. Both days honour the gift of giving, and making a sustainable difference in people’s lives.

We also welcome to our school our intermediate Math Coach, Anne Grant. She will share her expertise with our grade seven and eight teachers and students, and enrich our understanding of Math through open ended problem solving strategies.

This year Rolling Hills has a new website. You are welcome to visit this site at http://rhp.tldsb.on.ca/ and enter one of the classroom websites. Intermediate teachers post assignments and on-going projects so that you can be versed in your student’s work responsibilities. In order to save on paper you will also be able to access the newsletter on this site and save any important information for future reference. As time goes along, we will be able to add other features such as valuable student and parent resources.

Our teachers and students continue to work hard to succeed. We recognize this through our results on the provincial EQAO scores. Our grade sixes surpassed our goals last year, and we continue to strive for continued success in this year’s results. It is apparent that student learning is at the heart of everything we do at Rolling Hills and that it is a shared vision. We understand that EQAO is not just grade six, but it is a shared responsibility and everyone works to ensure student success in every grade. For more information on EQAO I encourage you to visit the website through our EQAO link on our Rolling Hills website.

There are some dates to keep in mind: October 9th and November 6th are PA days. Cross Country at Ken Reid is Tuesday October 6th. The Zone soccer date is Thursday October 15th, Rolling Hills will be hosting the Jr. Mixed tournament.

These are busy times for everyone; and with this in mind please feel free to call at any time 705-277-9515. You can leave a message if we are not here, and we will make sure we get back to you as soon as possible and at your convenience. We are committed to working together to make this a positive and meaningful experience for you and your family.

All the best,

Linda O’Leary
